What Makes SEE Change different?
At our annual issues & Actions conference we learn about and vote for the issues we want to work on.
We develop our skills in effective organizing. Students take leadership roles within their campus chapter, and students from each chapter make up SEE Change state board of directors, who direct the road SEE Change takes.
SEE Change runs grassroots advocacy campaigns on campus, in the community, and the state legislator.
We lobby at the Capitol to represent the student perspectives on social, economic, and environmental policies that affect young people.
SEE Change, formerly known as The Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG), was founded by students at the University of Minnesota – Duluth (UMD) in 1971, who acknowledged issues throughout Minnesota that were not being addressed. These students believed in the same fundamental values in which students in today’s generation still hold very dear, that education is fundamental and voices of individuals can make a large change. In 1971, students were empowered to bridge the gap between learning about and acting on pressing issues occurring on campus, in the community, and across the state of Minnesota. They came together to establish a nonprofit organization that would utilize the tools in our democratic system to create lasting change on social, environmental, and consumer rights issues – they called the group MPIRG. What ensued was a statewide student movement that put these young leaders at the forefront of solving many of the pressing social issues that face Minnesota. In 2022, MPIRG changed its name to SEE Change, an acronym for Social, Environmental, and Economic Change, to better reflect our goals and values. SEE Change is a nonprofit, non-partisan, student-run grassroots organization that strives to make economic, environmental and social change throughout the state of Minnesota. The organization itself strives to empower and train students to engage in their community and take collective action for the public's interest in creating change.
